That matters for the cooking, because the Balinese repertoire it works from leans on fresh aromatics rather than long-life pastes, and the daily market run is part of how the kitchen actually runs.
The restaurant has stood in West Melbourne since 1989 and is still family run. The dining room is fitted out on a tropical theme, and the format is straightforward table service rather than anything elaborate.
Three dishes anchor the menu. Babi guling is the Balinese roast pork, served with crackling. Ayam betutu takes a whole spatchcock, packs it with spice paste and cooks it slowly until the meat pulls away. Nasi campur arrives as rice ringed with a rotating set of small sides, which is the usual way to sample several things in one sitting. Because pork appears on the menu in its most prominent dish, this is not a halal kitchen, which is worth knowing before booking.
Provision for other diets is unusually broad for a restaurant of this size. There is a full vegan menu, a substantial number of gluten free options, and a children's menu that offers milder versions of the same dishes rather than a separate list of unrelated food.
Drinks divide by service. Fresh juices and tropical mocktails go with takeaway orders, while dining in adds Bintang, wine and a short cocktail list.
The trading week is short, so it pays to check before travelling. The kitchen opens Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm to 9pm and closes on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. For the days it is shut, the restaurant sells batch cooked meals frozen down in advance, which can be collected and reheated at home.
