About Toko Ramee

Toko Ramee opened in the summer of 1961, when Mr and Mrs Oen took over a run down grocer's at Ferdinand Bolstraat 74 in Amsterdam's De Pijp. Mrs Oen had come from Java and brought both retail experience and cooking knowledge to the business. Accounts of the early years record that she repaid the investor who backed the purchase within two years and later opened further locations. The original address has traded continuously since.

Position counts for a shop like this. Ferdinand Bolstraat runs north to south through De Pijp and crosses Albert Cuypstraat, where the daily Albert Cuyp market sets up a short walk from the door. The market and the streets around it have carried Asian food stalls and grocers for decades, and Toko Ramee sits in the middle of that cluster.

The shelves are the main draw. The shop carries dry goods and spices imported from Indonesia, ready made boemboe pastes for dishes such as rendang, opor and soto, along with krupuk, sambals, coconut milk, palm sugar and other staples that Dutch supermarkets either do not stock or stock in limited form. Kretek, the Indonesian clove cigarettes, are sold alongside the groceries.

There is a second half to the business. A counter at the front sells prepared Indonesian food to take away, and a small eating area sits at the back of the shop, reached by a short flight of steps down. The kitchen works mainly from Javanese cooking, though Dutch restaurant directories also file the shop under Chinese and Indian dishes, which reflects the mixed menu common to tokos in the Netherlands.

Opening times are limited compared with a supermarket. The shop is closed on Sundays and Mondays, opens from 10:00 to 18:30 Tuesday through Friday, and from 10:00 to 18:00 on Saturday.

Because the shop is small and the stock rotates with what arrives from Indonesia, the range varies week to week rather than holding to a fixed list.
