About H2O Toko Indo

Most of what H2O Toko Indo sells is not on a shelf at all. The centre of the shop is a counter of home cooked Indonesian food sold by the box: curries, nasi campur, ayam balado in a sticky chilli sauce, lontong, bakwan fritters, ikan bilis and spiced peanuts. A box of ayam balado runs to around ten dollars and feeds two people with rice, which is why the shop functions as much as a canteen for Sydney's Indonesian community as a grocer.

The packaged range sits behind it. Instant noodles take up a good share of the space, Pop Mie prominently among them, alongside cassava chips, Mamee, mi goreng flavoured Chitatos and tempe crisps. Pantry goods run to sweet biscuits, savoury crackers, teas, three in one coffees, spice mixes, fried shallots, vinegars and kecap manis. Limited runs of novelty items, salted egg crisps and the like, arrive irregularly and clear quickly.

The business does more than groceries. It has operated as a travel agent and phone sales point as well, which is a common arrangement for diaspora shops that serve as a general errand stop. It trades online as H2O Mart, shipping across Australia, and it appears in the Indonesian Ministry of Trade's directory of Indonesian stores abroad.

The shop is at 303 Castlereagh Street in Haymarket, at the southern end of the Sydney central business district near Thaitown, a short walk from Central station and the light rail. It opens daily from 10:30 in the morning until 9:00 at night, and offers dine in, takeaway and delivery.

The two numbers are a few doors apart on the same block, so the discrepancy is minor in practice, but anyone navigating by street number should expect the shopfront to read Toko Indo rather than H2O Mart, since the older name is still the one most customers use.
