About BNI New York

Bank Negara Indonesia's New York office traces back to 1978, when it first opened as a representative office in the city, one of the earliest Indonesian banks to establish a presence in New York. The office was upgraded to full agency status in August 1983, a change that allowed it to begin conducting banking operations directly rather than functioning purely as a liaison point, and it has operated continuously from that year onward.

That continuity is notable given the two financial crises the agency weathered along the way. During the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the 2008 US financial crisis, a number of Indonesian banks operating in the United States scaled back or closed their American operations entirely; BNI's New York agency remained open through both periods. As of January 2025, the agency relocated to One Liberty Plaza, taking space on the 27th floor of the lower Manhattan office tower at 1 Liberty Street.

The agency's work centers on four areas: lending to corporate and commercial clients, including investment loans, working capital financing, and participation in syndicated loans; treasury operations covering money market transactions, foreign exchange, and capital markets, where it was the first Indonesian bank to issue a USD certificate of deposit for the global market; remittance services for both individual and corporate customers moving money between the US and Indonesia; and correspondent banking, where its status as a member of the USD Fedwire Clearing House lets it process USD payments on behalf of other Indonesian banks.

BNI operates under supervision from Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Bank Indonesia, and deposits are covered by the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS) up to IDR 2 billion per customer per bank. The New York office can be reached at (212) 943-4750 or through bankbniny.com, and typically keeps standard weekday banking hours. For Indonesian nationals living in the New York area, particularly those sending remittances home or managing US-based accounts tied to Indonesian banking relationships, the agency offers a direct link to Indonesia's banking system without routing through a third-party institution.
