About Langen Suka Gamelan Music Inc
Long before most of the diplomatic and banking listings in this directory existed, Sydney already had an organized community playing Javanese gamelan. What is now Langen Suka Gamelan Music Inc traces back to a continuing education course in Javanese gamelan taught at the University of Sydney by Dr Jennifer Lindsay, whose students formed the Sydney University Gamelan Society. A parallel student ensemble, Gamelan Kyai Kebo Giro, ran through the 1990s under ethnomusicologist Dr Sarah Weiss before one of her students, Vi King Lim, took over direction of the original society in 1997 after studying gamelan and dance in Surakarta, Central Java. The group was briefly renamed Sydney Gamelan Java before relaunching as Langen Suka Sydney Gamelan Association in 1999, and it reregistered under its current name, Langen Suka Gamelan Music Inc, in 2023.
The organization plays on a set of slendro and pelog gamelan instruments on loan from the Australian Museum and the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Sydney, an arrangement that ties the group directly to Indonesia's official presence in the city. The instruments have moved between venues over the decades, from the Old Darlington School at the University of Sydney until 2015, to the Robert Webster Building at UNSW until 2023, and now to a historic wool store building in Ultimo, near the Sydney Fish Market. Langen Suka runs on two tracks. A Members Group holds weekly practices on Tuesday evenings, while separate Beginners and Intermediate Group Courses run in four terms a year timed to NSW school terms, each opening with a free public workshop before eight weekly 90-minute Saturday sessions. Courses are capped at twelve participants.
