Before Ngopi existed in London, it existed in Birmingham, where its Jakarta-born owners opened what they describe as the first and only independent coffee shop with Indonesian character anywhere in the UK back in 2018. The Dalston Lane location, which opened in November 2021 in a stretch of Hackney known for its mix of independent food businesses, became the brand's second site and its introduction to the capital, bringing Indonesian coffee culture to a part of London that had none.

The menu leans toward home-style Indonesian light meals rather than a full restaurant spread: a Fried Indomie Toastie made from instant noodles pressed between bread with cheese, corned beef, and egg; Bakso Malang, a soup built around beef meatballs, fried tofu, and prawn wonton; Batagor, fried dumplings served with peanut and sweet soy sauces; and Ayam Penyet with rice for those wanting something heartier. Desserts run to Roti Bakar, thick-sliced bread grilled with butter and topped with shredded cheese, chocolate, and condensed milk. On the drinks side, the shop imports its own coffee beans from Indonesia and serves them alongside kopi susu panas, a double-shot espresso mixed with milk and palm sugar syrup, plus fruit-forward options like iced pink banana lattes and melon milk. Beans are also sold by the bag for customers who want to take the coffee home.

The cafe is halal certified, seats a small number of guests at tables toward the back of the shop, and otherwise operates as a counter-service spot for takeaway. Typical hours run Monday through Friday from 8:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon, extending to 10:00 to 6:00 on weekends, though as with any small independent business these can shift and are worth confirming before a special trip. Ngopi is one of only a small number of Indonesian food businesses in London that isn't a full-service restaurant, filling a gap for casual, coffee-forward Indonesian dining in a city where most existing options lean toward sit-down meals.
