About Simpang Asia Palms
Leni Kumalasari, who comes from Malang in East Java, opened Simpang Asia as a small cafe in 2008. About a year later she took on the adjoining unit, which had traded as Cheviot Farms, and turned it into a grocery. The two halves still run side by side, so a meal can be followed by a shop, and that combination is much of why the place works as a gathering point for Indonesians across the west side of Los Angeles.
A note on the address, since it is often reported wrongly. The restaurant is not in Culver City. It stands on National Boulevard in Palms, inside Los Angeles city limits in the 90034 postcode, near the corner of Rose and Motor avenues, close enough to serve Culver City, Mar Vista, Venice and Westchester without being in any of them. The business itself calls this branch Simpang Asia Palms.
The kitchen works in street food formats rather than banquet ones. Nasi bungkus is the dish most associated with the place, a parcel of rice wrapped in banana leaf with chicken curry, beef rendang, egg and vegetables. Sayur bungkus is the vegetarian version, built on vegetable curry with tofu and tempeh. Nasi rames arrives as a rice platter with spiced chicken curry, tofu tempeh and rendang. Ayam goreng kuning, chicken fried with turmeric, is another regular order, and the menu carries nasi goreng, satay, gado gado and soups alongside. Sambal is made in house.
The grocery next door stocks Indonesian and wider Asian packaged goods, which makes this one of the few addresses in the area where a pantry shop and a meal happen in the same trip.
A separate location trades as Simpang Venice on Lincoln Boulevard and keeps its own hours. It is listed separately in this directory.
The Palms dining room keeps the same hours every day of the week, opening at 11:30 in the morning and closing at 22:00.
