About De Kleine Indo

Professor Romeinstraat runs behind Ringbaan Oost on the eastern side of Tilburg, and at number 19 sits De Kleine Indo, an Indonesian restaurant that has served the neighbourhood since it opened in April 2008. The dining room leans into a traditional presentation: wayang puppets rest on the windowsill, bamboo placemats cover the tables, and staff wear sarongs while taking orders. The kitchen works through a long list of home-style dishes rather than a short, modernized menu. Rice and noodle plates form the backbone of the offering, including nasi goreng (with its spicier betawi variant), bami goreng, mihun goreng, and lontong, each served with krupuk, pickled cucumber, gado gado, and a choice of chicken satay or tofu. Among the meat and fish dishes are rendang, beef simmered slowly in coconut milk and spice; semoor, beef braised in sweet soy ketjap; babi ketjap, a pork version of the same preparation; and pepesan, a spiced tilapia fillet wrapped and steamed in banana leaf. A rames Jakarta plate pairs babi ketjap with chicken satay on one platter. Vegetarian diners can order gado gado or the dish simply called Bali, a combination of sambal goreng beans, corn fritters, sambal goreng tempeh, and tofu satay over rice. Starters include lemper (sticky rice rolls with a chicken or curried filling), spring rolls, soto ayam chicken soup, a mildly spiced Indonesian tomato soup, and chicken satay with peanut sauce. Groups can order the two-person rijsttafel, which spreads babi ketjap, braised beef, satay, and several sambal goreng dishes with krupuk across the table in the traditional rice-table format. Desserts include kue dadar, a green coconut pancake with Javanese sugar; spekkoek, the layered spiced cake; and fried banana, all served with ice cream. The restaurant takes reservations by phone or email and also offers takeaway. Because the menu includes pork and ketjap-based pork dishes, De Kleine Indo is not a halal establishment. It is closed Monday through Wednesday, opening only in the evening from Thursday to Sunday.
