About Warung PAS

Sexyland World is a creative clubhouse in Amsterdam-Noord built from shipping containers, and since July 2024 one corner of it has held Warung PAS, also written Café Warung Pas, an Indonesian kitchen run by Petra Moerbeek. Moerbeek trained as an architect, grew up in Yogyakarta, and moved to the Netherlands at eighteen. During the coronavirus lockdowns she began cooking for friends on Thursdays, working from family recipes and from videos of Indonesian home cooks rather than written instructions, and after the lockdowns lifted she hosted small cooking events before Sexyland World offered her a permanent spot. The name Pas is a Bahasa Indonesia word meaning just right, and the operation is split into two parts: an Indomie tent serving instant noodle soup dressed up with vegetables, a soft egg, and optional extra toppings, and a sit-down side with a short, changing menu. The restaurant menu holds only a handful of starters, four main courses, and two desserts at any one time, and the whole lineup is rewritten roughly every two weeks, so the dishes available on a given visit depend on what Moerbeek is cooking that fortnight. She has spoken about wanting to move Indonesian food in the Netherlands away from colonial-era restaurant interiors and romanticised rijsttafel spreads, aiming instead for something closer to how Indonesians actually eat at home. The address, Noordwal 1 in Amsterdam-Noord, is reached most easily by the free ferry across the IJ from Amsterdam Centraal. The restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesday, opens in the early evening Wednesday through Sunday, and advises booking in advance since tables fill quickly, with some walk-in seating available and more when the outdoor terrace is open.
