About Nusantara Arts Culture Center
Buffalo's Indonesian arts scene has a home at the Nusantara Arts Culture Center, which operates out of St. John Grace Episcopal Church at 490 Lafayette Avenue in the city's Elmwood Village neighborhood. The organization traces back to what was originally known as the Buffalo Gamelan Club, one of the few gamelan ensembles in the United States not affiliated with a university music department. A May 2026 event marking "Two Islands, One Gong" celebrated ten years of gamelan activity in Buffalo, placing the group's roots at around 2016. The club later took the name Nusantara Arts, drawing on an old Javanese word for the Indonesian archipelago, and in April 2024 held an open house marking the grand opening of its dedicated culture center in Elmwood Village, timed alongside a Kartini Day celebration honoring the Indonesian women's rights pioneer. Matt Dunning serves as executive director. The organization maintains both Javanese and Balinese gamelan ensembles, offering free introductory classes to newcomers alongside ongoing community and performance groups. Programming for the 2026 to 2027 season includes Bali Comes to Buffalo each December, now in its fourth year, a Moonlight Gamelan Valentine concert planned for February 2027, a Back to Nature program in September 2026, and a May 2027 production called Dreams of Shadow, Light, and Memory, which points to continued work with wayang kulit shadow puppetry. The center also runs a guest lecture series and a virtual concert series inviting outside composers to write new works for gamelan. In its earlier years as the Buffalo Gamelan Club, the group received support from the Indonesian embassy and, in 2021, from a New York State environmental conservation grant tied to an art project about global warming, reflecting an interest in pairing traditional Indonesian music with contemporary themes. Dunning has described the broader mission as using gamelan to foster cross-cultural understanding and push back against negative stereotyping of Asian Americans. The center can be reached at (505) 510-3667 or through nusantaraarts.com, and its programs are listed as open to the public, with season passes available at a discount for the full concert schedule. Regular operating hours are not published, since activity centers on scheduled classes, rehearsals, and ticketed events rather than walk-in visits.
