About Waroeng Padang Lapek

Waroeng Padang Lapek serves Minangkabau cuisine from West Sumatra in a modest storefront on Schoolstraat in The Hague. Suprapti, the restaurant's owner, opened the business on 3 October 2019, building it from a small operation into one of the city's more established Padang kitchens. The menu centers on dishes cooked in the slow simmered, coconut milk based style associated with the Minangkabau region: rendang, beef or offal cooked for hours until the sauce reduces into a thick, dark paste; gulai tunjang, a tangy stew made from beef tendon; paru balado, deep fried beef lung tossed in a fiery chili sambal; and gulai jengkol, a stinkbean curry that is something of an acquired taste even among Indonesians but remains a staple of Padang cooking. For dessert, the restaurant offers kue lupis, sticky rice cakes rolled in grated coconut and drizzled with palm sugar syrup, and tjendol, a chilled dessert drink built around green rice flour jelly, coconut milk and palm sugar.

The restaurant draws much of its supply and production from a central kitchen the business operates at Mercuriusweg, also in Den Haag. In 2025, Bank Negara Indonesia's Amsterdam office extended a credit facility that allowed the business to purchase that kitchen property outright rather than continue leasing it, a financing arrangement BNI itself has publicized as part of its support for Indonesian diaspora businesses in the Netherlands. The restaurant has also been reported to be preparing a second branch in Amsterdam, expanding beyond its original Den Haag base.

Waroeng Padang Lapek is open every day except Monday, from noon until nine in the evening. It sits in a part of The Hague with a long established Indonesian dining scene, alongside several other Padang and Javanese restaurants that cater to both the city's Indonesian community and a broader Dutch customer base with an appetite for Indonesian food. No website or social media presence could be confirmed for the restaurant at the time of writing; customers looking to place orders or confirm details are best served calling ahead.
