About Suku

Suku is a casual Balinese style warung operating inside FOMO FREO, a shared food hall in Fremantle's Kings Square precinct, south of Perth. The stall takes its name from the Indonesian word for tribe or ethnic group, and builds its short menu around two mains rather than a sprawling list of dishes: Nasi Bali, hand shredded chicken or a vegetarian alternative served over rice with chicken crackling, roasted peanuts, vegetables and a housemade sambal matah, and rendang, offered in either beef or vegetarian versions, slow cooked in coconut milk and spices until the sauce thickens around the meat.

Alongside the two mains, Suku offers a handful of smaller plates and sides: satay lilit, minced meat or seafood pressed onto skewers and grilled; tempe goreng, fried marinated tempeh; rujak, a tangy fruit and vegetable salad dressed in a sweet spicy palm sugar sauce; batagor, fried fish and tofu dumplings served with peanut sauce; terong belado, eggplant cooked in a chili sambal; and tahu telur, a fried tofu and egg omelette. Desserts lean toward Balinese comfort food, including black sticky rice pudding and a burnt coconut gelato, while the drinks list runs from Es Kopi Susu, Indonesian iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk, to coconut water, jasmine tea and a sweet soda drink called soda gembira. The venue is licensed, with Bintang beer, wine and mixed drinks available, and also allows bring your own.

Suku serves lunch from Wednesday to Sunday and dinner from Thursday to Saturday. It is one of several food stalls operating under the FOMO FREO banner, a precinct that has become a dining destination in its own right within Fremantle, and sits a short distance from Fremantle's other, longer running Indonesian venues. No phone number could be confirmed for the stall; its website, sukufreo.com, and social media channels appear to be the main points of contact. Ownership and founding details were not independently verifiable beyond its listing in the WA Good Food Guide's 2024 Top 100 and coverage on the City of Fremantle's own tourism site.
