Garuda Street Food occupies a small storefront at 1046 1/2 West Argyle Street in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood, on the stretch of Argyle and Broadway that the city's Vietnamese and Southeast Asian restaurant scene has long anchored, within walking distance of the Argyle Red Line stop, the Aragon Ballroom, and the Riviera Theatre. The restaurant opened with a soft launch on May 31, 2026 and began full service the next day, taking over a space that had previously housed Gusto's. It is one of only two dedicated Indonesian restaurants currently operating in Chicago, the other being Rendang Republic, which opened in 2025 with an Americanized take on Indonesian cooking; Garuda's owners have described their own menu as broader and more traditional by comparison.

The menu centers on Indonesian street food. Starters include tahu susur, a crunchy stuffed tofu dish with bean sprouts, carrots, and cabbage, and sate ayam, grilled chicken skewers served with peanut sauce. Rice plates range from a straightforward nasi goreng to nasi rames, a mixed plate that can include beef rendang, bebek madura, a crispy-skinned duck leg, fried anchovies, cassava leaf curry, and egg balado. Noodle and soup options include mie ayam, egg noodles topped with chicken and meatballs, and soto tangkar, a coconut and turmeric beef broth. The kitchen makes six sambals in house, among them sambal ijo, sambal terasi, and sambal bawang, and desserts include es campur, a shaved ice with condensed milk, jackfruit, jellies, and red beans.

The dining room is small, with only a handful of tables, and parties sometimes share seating with strangers during busy periods. Wait times of around 30 minutes are common, and popular dishes such as the rendang and sate ayam can sell out before closing. The restaurant is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 3:00 to 8:30 PM, and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 8:30 PM with a break between 3:00 and 4:30 PM; it is closed on Tuesdays. The Infatuation's Chicago guide rated it 8.3 out of 10, in the publication's Great tier, singling out the nasi rames, tahu susur, and es campur for particular praise.
