In the Minangkabau dialect of Padang, the word tambuah means to add more, while mas doubles as an address for a waiter and a reference to gold, the combination meant to suggest hospitality of a golden standard. Tambuah Mas has carried that name since 1981, when it opened as one of Singapore's earliest dedicated Indonesian restaurants, and its outlet in the basement of Paragon on Orchard Road has become the most visited of its several locations across the island.

The kitchen is run by chefs from Indonesia who prepare dishes drawn from three distinct regional traditions: Padang, Sulawesi, and Java.
