About Bara Food Tanjong Pagar
Nasi bakar, rice cooked with spices and herbs, wrapped in banana leaf, and grilled until the leaf chars and perfumes the grains inside, is the dish around which Bara Food built its entire concept. The restaurant opened in Singapore in 2019, founded by Surya under Atmaja Holdings, with the stated aim of showing that Indonesian cuisine extends well beyond the more familiar ayam penyet and nasi padang found across the island's hawker centres and food courts.
The outlet at Tanjong Pagar sits inside Icon Village, part of the Altez development, at 16 Enggor Street, #01-10, Singapore 079717, a short walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT station's Exit A. Bara Food received halal certification in December 2020, several months after opening, and the kitchen has since expanded its offerings while keeping nasi bakar as the anchor of the menu. Other dishes served include ayam bakar (grilled chicken), empal rica rica (beef in a spicy rica rica sauce associated with Manadonese cooking), gado gado (mixed vegetables with peanut sauce), and soto betawi (a Jakarta style beef and offal soup in a coconut milk broth).
The restaurant opened only months before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period the founder has described as a serious test for the young business. It survived that period and has since grown to two outlets in Singapore.
