About Sekolah Republik Indonesia Tokyo

Indonesia's school in Tokyo began as a stopgap for embassy families and grew into a full institution. Ambassador Bambang Sugeng opened it on 21 April 1962 under the name Taman Pendidikan Indonesia di Jepang, with kindergarten, primary and junior secondary classes for 45 pupils, housed in the compound of OWIT, the Indonesian women's organisation in Tokyo. It took its present name at a flag ceremony on 17 August 1963 and was recognised by Indonesia's Ministry of Education and Culture by decree that August.

The school moved several times before settling. Senior secondary classes started in 1965 with five students, prompting a move to the Wisma Indonesia building in Setagaya. In 1970 it shifted to a former Mitsui Bank premises in Minami Bamba, and in 1971 it moved into the newly built Balai Indonesia in Meguro, where it has stayed since. A library and physics, chemistry and biology laboratories opened there in 1972.

Today the school covers the full Indonesian sequence, from TK at kindergarten level through SD, SMP and SMA, on a campus of roughly 1,834 square metres. It carries Swasta Berbantuan status, meaning private with government support, and holds accreditation from Indonesia's national board recorded under decree 185/BAN-SM/LL/XII/2011, graded B for kindergarten and A at primary, junior and senior secondary level. It runs under the school working body of the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo.

One change matters for families weighing the school against Japanese options. In 2003 Japan's education ministry formally recognised the institution, which allows graduates to sit Japanese university entrance examinations directly rather than through an equivalency route. The school has since built partnerships with Japanese schools and international bodies.

The campus is at 4-6-6 Meguro in Meguro ward, and the school day runs from 9:00 in the morning to 16:00.

Meguro sits on the Yamanote line in south west Tokyo, which puts the campus within reach of most of the city's residential districts without a long commute.
