About Indonesia Centre, Busan University of Foreign Studies

Busan University of Foreign Studies, on Geumsaem-ro 485beon-gil in Geumjeong-gu, opened an Indonesia Centre on its campus in June 2022, housed on the fourth floor of the school's Trinity Hall building. The centre, known in Korean as the Indonesia Cooperation Institute, was established as the first body of its kind that Indonesia has formally set up in partnership with a Korean university, and it should not be confused with the older, privately owned Busan Indonesia Center building in the city's Buk-gu district, which opened a decade earlier and serves a different, gallery-and-cafe function. Professor Kim Ye-gyeom of the university's Indonesia-Malaysia department serves as the centre's director, with Kim Chang-beom, a former Indonesian ambassador to South Korea, acting as an advisor. At the opening ceremony, Indonesian Ambassador Gandi Sulistiyanto Soeherman described it as a hub meant to connect Indonesian central and local governments, universities, and private organizations with counterparts in Busan and the wider Gyeongsang region. One of its core programs is BIPA+, an Indonesian-language course aimed at Korean business staff, investors, and travelers who need practical language skills for dealing with Indonesia. The centre also runs regular cultural classes on campus, teaching Indonesian traditions such as batik, angklung, wayang kulit, wayang suket, and regional dance to BUFS students roughly twice a week over several months at a time. Its staff and student volunteers have represented Indonesia at public events in the city, including Busan's annual Global Gathering festival, where in 2024 they set up a display of batik cloth, angklung instruments, and traditional costumes that drew interest from a crowd estimated at around 13,000 visitors. The centre also takes part in an annual Indonesian Week on the BUFS campus, held jointly with the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul, and has supplied judges for Indonesian-language singing competitions organized through the embassy's BIPA Korea program. No public phone number, email, or visitor hours have been published for the centre, so those fields are left blank rather than guessed at; inquiries are generally directed through the university's Indonesia-Malaysia department or its Office of International Affairs.
