PT. Bank Muamalat Indonesia, Tbk holds a distinction among Indonesian banks operating abroad: its branch in Kuala Lumpur, opened in 2009, was for years the only branch of an Indonesian bank operating in Malaysia, and remains the only Indonesian bank licensed to operate as a full branch, rather than a representative or remittance office, in the country. The Kuala Lumpur branch offers corporate and retail banking services and supports real time cross border transactions between Indonesia and Malaysia, a service used by Indonesian businesses and individuals with financial ties to both countries, including the large Indonesian migrant worker population in Malaysia. This differs from the purely remittance focused services offered by some other Indonesian financial institutions with a presence in the country.
