About PT. Bank Muamalat Indonesia, Tbk (Kuala Lumpur Branch)

PT. Bank Muamalat Indonesia, Tbk holds a distinction among Indonesian banks operating abroad: its branch in Kuala Lumpur, opened in 2009, was for years the only branch of an Indonesian bank operating in Malaysia, and remains the only Indonesian bank licensed to operate as a full branch, rather than a representative or remittance office, in the country. The branch operates under an International Islamic Banking licence granted by Bank Negara Malaysia, Malaysia's central bank, which places it under the same regulatory oversight as Malaysia's domestic Islamic banks.

Bank Muamalat Indonesia itself was established in Indonesia on 1 November 1991, under the endorsement of the Indonesian Council of Ulema (Majelis Ulama Indonesia) and the Indonesian government, and began operating in May 1992 as the country's first Islamic bank. It has since grown to more than 325 branches, sub branches, cash offices, and mobile branches across Indonesia, with international shareholders including the Islamic Development Bank, Boubyan Bank, and the National Bank of Kuwait.

The Kuala Lumpur branch offers corporate and retail banking services and supports real time cross border transactions between Indonesia and Malaysia, a service used by Indonesian businesses and individuals with financial ties to both countries, including the large Indonesian migrant worker population in Malaysia. This differs from the purely remittance focused services offered by some other Indonesian financial institutions with a presence in the country.

The branch is located at Suite 1.03-1.05, Wisma Goldhill, No. 67 Jalan Raja Chulan, 50200 Kuala Lumpur, a commercial building in the city's Golden Triangle district near the Raja Chulan monorail station. It can be reached by phone at +603 2711 0807. Operating hours were not confirmed at the time of writing and are not listed in this record; enquiries about hours should be directed to the branch directly. The bank's presence in Kuala Lumpur is sometimes confused with unrelated organisations that also use the initials BNI, most notably Bank Negara Indonesia, a separate Indonesian state bank with its own outlets in Malaysia, and Business Network International, an unrelated referral networking organisation with a Kuala Lumpur chapter; PT. Bank Muamalat Indonesia, Tbk, is distinct from both.
