Padmanadi began more than two decades ago when Kasim Kasim, who had previously helped run a family restaurant in Jakarta, immigrated to Edmonton and opened a vegan Indonesian restaurant at a time when, according to his daughter and current co-operator Maya Richmond, there was little or no Indonesian food available in the city. Richmond has described the restaurant's start in immigrant-story terms: the family did not speak much English when they arrived, and running a restaurant was the trade her parents already knew.
