About Ibu Ruby's

A corner lot in Bangsar's Lucky Garden enclave, just behind the well-known Bala's Banana Leaf, has housed Ibu Ruby's since its opening on 28 November 2024. The restaurant takes its name and its founding recipes from Ibu Ruby, a cook born in Yogyakarta who worked in the Jakarta household of restaurateur Haji Mohd Imran's family starting in 1979; Imran, who also co-founded the Muslim-friendly Italian restaurant Positano Risto, built the menu around dishes he remembered from his childhood. In its first year the restaurant described itself as serving "Indo-Malay" cuisine, pairing Indonesian regional classics with Malay staples on the same menu, but by mid-2025 it had revamped its offerings to focus exclusively on Indonesian dishes, a shift the restaurant itself framed as a return to its original inspiration. The current menu centers on rice dishes such as Nasi Rendang Ayam Bali, chicken simmered in Balinese spices and served with rice, pickled vegetables, and a soft-boiled egg, and Nasi Rendang Sapi, a dry-style beef rendang in the West Sumatran tradition. Nasi Goreng Batavia, a Jakarta-style fried rice topped with a fried egg, crispy shallots, and prawn crackers, is another staple, alongside satay served in four regional styles: Maranggi, Madura, Kelapa, and Padang. Earlier menus also featured soto ayam, nasi ambeng, beef dendeng Minang, udang gulai lemak, and a grilled banana dessert, pisang bakar, served with vanilla ice cream; some of these dishes may have been rotated off the current menu since the 2025 revamp. Set meals come with a choice of drink, including yuzu strawberry, yuzu lemonade, teh malaya, or a house ruby lemonade. In its first year the kitchen was run with the help of chef Afique, a veteran of Nipah Cafe at EQ Kuala Lumpur, who worked with Imran to recreate the recipes from scratch without artificial additives in the pastes and sauces. The restaurant is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and takes reservations and inquiries by phone; it does not have its own website, operating instead through Facebook and Instagram under the handle @iburubys. It fills a gap in the directory's Kuala Lumpur coverage, adding a Bangsar address distinct from the city's existing Indonesian restaurant listings, in a dining strip otherwise dominated by Malay and other Southeast Asian kitchens.
