Indonesia's embassy in Canada occupies a house at 55 Parkdale Avenue in the Mechanicsville neighborhood of Ottawa, a location the Indonesian government purchased and renovated in 1997 after decades at an earlier address on MacLaren Street. Diplomatic relations between the two countries date back to the 1950s, when Ali Sastroamidjojo served as Indonesia's first ambassador to Canada; before that, in 1952, Indonesia's presence in the country was a legation office across the river in Aylmer, Quebec. Today the embassy represents Indonesia not only bilaterally but also at the International Civil Aviation Organization, whose headquarters sit in Montreal, giving the Ottawa post a second diplomatic function beyond routine consular work.

For Indonesian citizens in the capital region, the embassy issues and renews passports, processes visa applications for visitors to Indonesia, and handles the legalization of documents that need to cross between Canadian and Indonesian jurisdictions. Consular staff are available Monday through Thursday from 9:30 in the morning until noon for document submission, with an afternoon window from 1:30 to 3:00 for collection; Friday hours run 9:30 to noon only. Visitors are asked to arrange an appointment in advance rather than walking in, since the consular section handles a caseload that spans Ontario, Quebec, and the surrounding provinces from a single location.

Beyond the two consulates-general the country maintains in Toronto and Vancouver, the Ottawa embassy remains the senior Indonesian diplomatic post in Canada and the one responsible for the country's formal relationship with the Canadian government, including trade, education, and cultural exchange programs aimed at the Indonesians living across the country. The chancery itself, a converted house rather than a purpose-built office block, gives the embassy a lower profile than some of its neighbors on Ottawa's diplomatic circuit, but its consular functions are identical to those of any other Indonesian mission abroad. Correspondence and appointment requests are generally handled through the embassy's own email address rather than a shared government mailbox.
