About Kantor Dagang dan Ekonomi Indonesia (KDEI) Taipei

Indonesia and Taiwan have no formal diplomatic relations, so Indonesia is represented in Taipei by a trade office rather than an embassy. In practice the Kantor Dagang dan Ekonomi Indonesia, known in English as the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office, does the work an embassy would. For the several hundred thousand Indonesians living in Taiwan, most of them migrant workers, it is the office that issues passports, intervenes in labour disputes and handles emergencies.

Its history explains the odd name. The post began in 1967 as an intelligence station, became a chamber of commerce office in 1970, and passed to the Ministry of Trade on 7 July 1994. It took its present name in 1995. Its counterpart in Jakarta is the Taipei Economic and Trade Office. Arif Sulistiyo currently heads the office.

Work is split across divisions, and knowing which one to approach saves time. The immigration section handles passports and travel documents, and has moved much of that process online, with a queue booking system and, since early 2026, digital payment. The manpower section deals with placement and employment matters. A separate citizen protection section handles cases where a worker is in difficulty, and publishes its own hotline numbers rather than routing calls through the switchboard. Trade, investment, industry and tourism promotion sit alongside the consular work.

Two practices are worth noting for workers whose only free day is Sunday. The office runs Sunday services, and it sends mobile service teams to cities outside Taipei, including passport renewal sessions in places such as Changhua. It also organises group wedding registration.

The office is at 6F, No. 550 Ruiguang Road, in the Neihu district in the east of Taipei, and its published service hours run from 09:00 to 18:00.

Neihu lies well east of central Taipei and is served by the Wenhu metro line, so allow travel time from the city centre. A fax line and a general email address are still published alongside the hotline numbers, which reflects how much of the office's casework arrives from outside the capital.
