The jurisdiction is what makes this office matter well beyond the city. It covers eight states: Arizona, the southern part of California, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming, together with the United States island territories in the Pacific. An Indonesian living in Phoenix, Denver, Honolulu or Salt Lake City deals with Los Angeles rather than with the embassy in Washington, which handles relations between the two governments rather than day to day paperwork.

Work at the counter is ordinary consular business. Passports are issued and renewed. Births, marriages and deaths are registered, and documents are legalised for use in Indonesia. Powers of attorney and other notarial papers are certified. Visas are issued to foreign nationals travelling to Indonesia. Citizen protection covers Indonesians who run into difficulty abroad, from lost documents to detention or hospitalisation.

Public hours run Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 12:00 and again from 13:30 to 17:00, with the office closed at weekends and on official holidays. Several services are booked through an online appointment system rather than handled as walk-ins, and document requirements are revised periodically, so confirming the current list before travelling is worthwhile, particularly for anyone coming from out of state.

The building stands at 3457 Wilshire Boulevard, on the stretch between MacArthur Park and Koreatown that the Metro subway runs beneath. Southern California holds one of the larger Indonesian populations in the United States, and the consulate also handles citizen registration and the national day events that follow from it.

One practical note for anyone weighing the trip. Because the office serves eight states, demand at the counter comes from a very wide area, and the consulate periodically runs outreach sessions in other cities so that people do not have to fly to Los Angeles for a passport renewal.
