Bank Syariah Indonesia, the Islamic bank formed in February 2021 through the merger of three of Indonesia's largest sharia-compliant banks (Bank Syariah Mandiri, BNI Syariah, and BRI Syariah), opened its first location outside Indonesia in Dubai in January 2022. The move gave the newly merged bank, commonly known as BSI, its first overseas footprint less than a year after its formation, in line with a stated ambition to become one of the ten largest Islamic banks globally.

The Dubai operation began as a Representative Office based in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), limited to marketing and promoting BSI's Indonesia-based investment products without directly handling client onboarding or transactions. On 17 August 2023, the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) approved an upgrade of that license, converting the Representative Office into a full Category 2 branch able to offer financial services and products directly to clients in the region.

In the years following the 2021 merger it ranked among Indonesia's largest banks by assets, operating more than 1,500 outlets across Indonesia and serving over 15 million customers domestically. The Indonesian government holds a controlling interest in the bank through Bank Mandiri, alongside a special Dwi-Warna share held by the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises. For Indonesians living or doing business in the UAE, the Dubai branch represents the first direct presence of a Jakarta-headquartered Islamic bank in the country, offering a point of contact for cross-border financial services tied to the home market.
