About Rumah Makan Nusantara

Opposite the World Trade Centre in central Kuala Lumpur, the five-star Sunway Putra Hotel at 100 Jalan Putra, 50350 Kuala Lumpur, houses Rumah Makan Nusantara, a 120-seat restaurant built around a menu of dishes drawn from across the Indonesian archipelago. The restaurant opened in 2023 as part of Indonesia's "Spice Up the World" gastro-diplomacy program, a government initiative aiming to open thousands of Indonesian restaurants abroad; industry coverage placed Rumah Makan Nusantara as the 1,301st restaurant registered under that program. A pre-launch event on 17 March 2023 was attended by Indonesia's then Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, along with Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, reflecting the restaurant's position as a joint project between the hotel group and Indonesian trade promotion efforts.

The interior pairs a modern, contemporary design with Indonesian arts and crafts, distinguishing it from the open air warung style more commonly associated with Indonesian dining. The a la carte menu spans regional specialties including mie tek tek, nasi goreng kambing, sate Madura, sate Padang, ketoprak, soto Betawi, and tongseng, most portioned to serve two diners. Starters and recommended items include cireng, risoles, sop buntut, ayam bakar Taliwang, and desserts such as es teler and pisang cokelat keju. Alongside the Indonesian menu, the restaurant also serves Malaysian dishes familiar to local diners, among them ayam percik, asam pedas ikan tenggiri, and daging rendang tok, a choice that situates the restaurant within Kuala Lumpur's broader dining scene rather than catering only to visitors.

Rumah Makan Nusantara is open from noon to 10pm, Monday through Saturday, and closed on Sundays. It can be reached by phone at +603 4040 9888 or by email at [email protected]. No certifying body for halal status was found in available sourcing, so halal status is not stated here. As a hotel based restaurant rather than a standalone shop, it offers a different setting from most Indonesian eateries catalogued in Malaysia, combining full service hotel dining with a menu built specifically around Indonesian provincial cuisine.
