About Restoran Rose
Tucked into Jalan Raja Alang in Kampung Baru, the old Malay settlement at the edge of downtown Kuala Lumpur, Restoran Rose has served Sumatran-style cooking to the neighborhood since the 1970s. Kampung Baru has long drawn migrants from West Sumatra, and the restaurant is described in local food coverage as a longstanding gathering spot for that Minang community, many of whose families settled in the area generations ago while keeping close ties to Indonesian cooking traditions.
The kitchen's rice is served nasi padang style, with an array of pre-cooked dishes displayed for diners to choose from rather than ordered off a menu. A visiting food writer singled out daging cincang, minced beef in gravy, and a green chili sambal as the dishes worth returning for, while an earlier visitor's account of a weekend breakfast there described lontong Medan, rice cakes served with rendang sauce, jackfruit stew, a boiled egg, potato patties, rice noodles, and a vegetable stew in coconut broth, alongside cattle skin crackers known as kerupuk kulit. In the evenings the restaurant also serves satay Minang and lontong, giving it a different character after dark than at breakfast and lunch.
The restaurant's long run in Kampung Baru has been recognized locally. One account describes it displaying a Food Trails plaque from Kuala Lumpur City Hall, part of a municipal effort to spotlight the city's established eateries, and its outdoor food displays and open kitchen setup along the street are part of what food writers point to as giving the block its character. The most recent independent account of a visit found during research dates to around 2019, so opening hours and operating status here should be treated as approximate rather than current; prospective diners are encouraged to call ahead. No evidence of closure was found during research, and the restaurant continues to appear in current Kuala Lumpur food guides aimed at Indonesian cuisine, but this listing is flagged for a follow-up check given the age of the most recent firsthand account located.
