About Niniq Javanese Cuisine

Jennifer and her sister Angela built Niniq Javanese Cuisine out of a family bakery that once operated from a single shop lot in Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru. As demand grew, the business opened further branches in Pelangi and Setia Tropika before the family eventually consolidated everything into one larger site at Jalan Molek 3/10 in Taman Molek, where two adjoining shop lots, numbered 19 and 21, now house the full restaurant, a patisserie counter and a catering arm called Cuizine Gourmet Catering. The kitchen's recipes trace back to the sisters' maternal grandmother, Suzanna Hartono of Surabaya, and the restaurant describes its food as strictly Javanese, with no pork, no lard and no alcohol anywhere on the menu.

The dishes reach beyond the nasi and sambal staples found at many Indonesian stalls in the region. Beef Rawon Daging pairs a dark, fragrant beef soup built on buah keluak black nut with Nasi Liwet, a coconut milk rice. Ayam Goreng Bakar, Javanese style chicken marinated and glazed in a sweet soy based sauce before grilling, has been named by at least one local food writer as the dish worth returning for. Other items on the menu include Sate Ayam chicken skewers, Udang Kare Java prawn curry, Ikan Goreng Garuda fried sea bass, Sambal Goreng Tempeh with prawns and petai stink beans, and Mie Bakso Sapi, a beef meatball noodle soup. Empek Empek, the fried fish cake associated with Palembang and served with a tangy vinegar based sauce, rounds out the savoury side, while Es Dawet, a Javanese take on cendol, closes the meal.

Niniq has been featured in round ups of Johor Bahru's Indonesian and Javanese dining scene from multiple local food writers, which independently describe the same Taman Molek address. Reported hours run from roughly 9am to 10pm, with the restaurant closed on Sundays, though this detail comes from an older source and has not been independently reconfirmed, so it is worth checking by phone before visiting. The restaurant sits in a quiet residential commercial strip typical of Taman Molek, drawing a mix of Indonesian diaspora regulars and local Malaysian diners drawn to its home style approach.
