About Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in South Korea

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Seoul is the country's principal diplomatic mission in South Korea, covering the whole of the Korean peninsula's southern half and serving an Indonesian community that Ministry of Foreign Affairs figures put at several tens of thousands of workers, students, and families. Diplomatic ties between Jakarta and Seoul date to 1973, with the mission itself opening the following year under its first ambassador, Sarwo Edhie Wibowo.

The chancery occupies premises on Yeouidaebang-ro in Yeongdeungpo-gu, on Yeouido, the island district that also houses South Korea's National Assembly and much of its financial sector. The location puts the embassy within easy reach of Saetgang Station on Subway Line 9 and several bus routes, making it one of the more accessible foreign missions in the city for visitors arriving without a car.

Consular staff handle the routine paperwork that keeps an overseas community connected to home: passport renewal and replacement, legalization of documents for use in Indonesia, notarial services, marriage and birth registration, and assistance for Indonesian citizens who run into legal or medical trouble abroad. The embassy also issues visas for Korean nationals and other travelers heading to Indonesia and supports trade and cultural exchange between the two countries, which have expanded economic ties considerably since the 2020 Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.

Beyond day-to-day consular work, the mission serves as a gathering point for Indonesians across Korea, hosting Independence Day commemorations each August alongside other cultural and religious events, and coordinating with community groups and the many Indonesian student associations based at Korean universities.

Chancery hours generally run Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though specific consular service windows for passport and document processing are typically narrower and worth confirming before a visit, since Indonesian missions abroad periodically adjust service hours around Korean and Indonesian public holidays. Visitors with urgent matters, such as loss of a passport or a citizen in custody, can generally reach the embassy through its published emergency contact channels outside normal hours.
