Long before it became a foreign embassy, the mansion at 2020 Massachusetts Avenue NW was built for Thomas Walsh, an Irish-born mining magnate, and given to his daughter Evalyn Walsh McLean, who later negotiated to buy the Hope Diamond in one of the building's dressing rooms. The fifty-room house, designed by architect Henry Andersen and completed in 1903, passed through several uses, including wartime medical-supply production by the American Red Cross, before Indonesia's government purchased it in December 1951. It has served as the country's embassy ever since and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of both the Massachusetts Avenue Historic District and the Dupont Circle Historic District.

Set along Embassy Row and reachable by the Dupont Circle Metro station, the building today houses the ambassador's offices and the embassy's diplomatic staff, while a sixteen-foot statue of Dewi Saraswati, the Balinese goddess of knowledge, has stood on the grounds since 2014, one of only a handful of sculptures placed along this stretch of Massachusetts Avenue. The consular section handles passport and visa services for Indonesian citizens across the greater Washington area, working alongside five consulates-general elsewhere in the country, in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, plus a mission to the United Nations in New York and an honorary consulate in Honolulu.

General office hours run Monday through Friday from 10:30 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon, though consular window times for specific services can vary and appointments are recommended. The embassy is closed on both U.S. federal holidays and Indonesian public holidays. Beyond routine consular matters, the mission handles the diplomatic relationship between the two countries across trade, defense, and cultural affairs, a portfolio that has grown alongside the size and visibility of the Indonesian-American community nationwide. Indonesia's current ambassador to the United States, Indroyono Soesilo, was appointed in August 2025, continuing a line of envoys stretching back to the building's purchase more than seventy years earlier. The embassy's location among dozens of other foreign missions along the same stretch of Massachusetts Avenue places it within walking distance of several other countries' chanceries, a layout unique to this part of the American capital.
